The Burlington Twins won the completion of Wednesday’s suspended game by scoring two runs in the 13th inning to take Game 5 of the series by a 21-19 score and force Game 6 but fell short when the Toronto Maple Leafs scored three runs in the ninth to take the best of seven quarter-final series four games to two. In the series clincher, Burlington scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead however the Leafs came back with three in the ninth to take game six 6-5 and the series. The Leafs scored their three runs in the ninth off Burlington reliever and losing pitcher Benson Merritt when Kyle DeGrace led off with a single followed by walks to Kern Watts and Dan Gibbons which loaded the bases with one out. Merritt then threw a wild pitch scoring DeGrace, followed by an intentional walk to Jordan Castaldo to again load the bases. Damon Topolie then grounded to short forcing Castaldo at second but a wild throw to first had Topolie safe with Watts and Gibbons both scoring on the play, giving Toronto a 6-5 lead. Chris Cox was the winning pitcher, mowing down the Twins with a one-two-three ninth. Drew Taylor started for Toronto and went 7 1-3 innings, allowing only six hits and three walks before tiring in the eighth. He was charged with four of Burlington’s runs. Twins and Maple Leafs Play Into the Night, Game Suspended Until Thursday Night
Wednesday night will go down as one of the most bizarre nights in the long history of Intercounty Baseball League play at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. The Toronto Maple Leafs came back from 11 runs down to force extra innings before the lights went out in the park at 10 minutes past midnight, resulting in their game with the Burlington Twins being suspended with the score tied 19-19 in the top of the 12th inning. Fans were left in the dark literally and figuratively as the game came to an abrupt halt with the Twins having one runner at first and two men out in the top of the 12th inning. According to IBL Commissioner Joe O’Neill, the game will be resumed at the point of the lights going out tonight at Nelson Park in Burlington, the site of the scheduled game six in the best-of-seven series. The teams will complete the suspended game and if necessary, then play the sixth game of the series immediately after. Toronto leads the opening round series 3-1. Before the lights went out the Leafs staged a dramatic comeback, rallying from an 18-7 deficit to force extra innings. Both teams scored single runs in the 10th before the game went to the top of the 12th still incredibly tied at 19. Matt Spillman, Ian Choy, Darryl Pui, Greg Densem and Jonathan Slattery all had three hits for the Twins, who had 21 hits and squandered a glorious chance to send the series back to Burlington at 3-2 instead of 3-1. Burlington used five pitchers including Kyle Bolton for two innings of relief, who was the final Twins pitcher before the suspension. Toronto also used five pitchers, including infielder Jarrod Ivan, who tossed one inning when the score was 16-7. He gave up two runs in the seventh but when the Leafs scored seven runs in the seventh to get within 18-14, Sam Jew came on in relief and allowed just one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings and was still pitching when the end came in the 12th. Kyle DeGrace, Jon Waltenbury and Jeremy Walker all had three hits for the Leafs, who had 19 hits.

Maple Leafs Earn 2nd Win of Series, Twins Ready for Game 4
Tuesday Night
Toronto 7 Burlington 5
In Toronto, Jon Waltenbury hit a pair of home runs as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied from a 4-2 deficit to edge the Burlington Twins 7-5 in the third game of their best-of-seven Intercounty Baseball League opening round series Sunday afternoon at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. Toronto leads the series 2-1 with game four in Burlington Tuesday night and game five back in Toronto Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The second place Leafs finished 13 games ahead of the seventh place Twins in the regular season, but have had to fight hard to take the series advantage back. They needed a crucial pinch-hit, two-run homer from Raul Borjas in the sixth inning to take the lead, and also a solo shot earlier in the inning and another two-run homer in the seventh from Waltenbury, to finally put game three away. Brett Lawson got the win for the Leafs, tossing six innings. He battled control problems at times but got the job done, allowing four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Sam Jew allowed one more run on one hit over two innings before a scoreless ninth from Chris Cox completed the 12-hitter. Sean Travers added two hits, scored a run and drove in another for the Leafs, who have now won the last two games in the series after dropping the series opener 13-9 last Wednesday. Burlington starter Kurtis Robinson left after 4 1/3 innings, and the Twins bullpen couldn't hold their early lead. Kyle Bolton, the second of two relievers to replace him, allowed the three Toronto homers in one inning of work and took the loss. Ryan Asis had a big day at the plate for the Twins with three hits and three RBI, while Jonathan Slattery also had three hits and scored a pair of runs.

Damon Topolie and Sean Travers both added two hits, a run scored and an RBI and Brian Ivan also drove in a pair of runs for the Leafs with a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded hit by pitch. Twins End Regular Season at Home vs Toronto
Burlington 8 Toronto 24
Jeremy Walker's grand slam highlighted a seven-run fifth inning and Dan Gibbons had six hits as the Toronto Maple Leafs ended the Intercounty Baseball League season with their seventh straight win, a 24-8 romp over the Burlington Twins in Burlington. Toronto (22-13) grabbed second place in the IBL standings and will meet Burlington (9-25) in the first round of the playoffs. The schedule will be announced Tuesday, with the Leafs expected to open up either Wednesday or Thursday at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. Toronto starter Jake Gallo really struggled and with second place at stake, the Leafs didn't stay with him long, giving him the hook after three innings in which he allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Leaf bullpen then got the job done, however, with Brett Lawson's scoreless fourth inning giving him credit for the win. And they got more than enough offensive support, as the Leafs also scored seven runs in the eighth inning. Walker wound up with two hits and six RBI and Dan Gibbons led the Toronto attack with his six hits and two RBI, while Kyle DeGrace had three hits, four runs scored and drove in two runs. Brian Ivan scored four runs and had two hits and Dan Marra homered and drove in three runs for the Leafs, who scored 17 runs in their win over London on Sunday. Burlington starter Taylor Boyle went four innings and gave up four runs on five hits with two walks. Reliever Jon Fitzsimmons was the victim of the big fifth inning and took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits in just one inning. Adam Cholewka hit a pair of home runs and had five RBI among his three hits for the Twins in a losing cause. Ian Choy and Peter Bako also had two hits for Burlington.

In Barrie, the Burlington Twins stunned the first place Baycats with 21 hits and seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a convincing 18-8 win, effectively snapping a nine game Barrie win streak. The Burlington Twins pounded out 15 hits and survived a Toronto ninth inning comeback attempt to win for just the fifth time this season, downing the Leafs 9-8 in Intercounty Baseball League play. Walker went three innings, allowing seven runs – six earned – on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks after allowing five runs in the top of the first inning. The Twins led 7-2 after three innings and hung on, despite the Leafs slapping out 13 hits of their own. Adam Cholewka had two hits, scored twice and drove in another two runs for Burlington (5-15), while Branson Joseph and Peter Bako both had two hits and an RBI. Ryan Asis added two hits and Jeff Kosta added a two-run double for the winners.
